Georgetown Methodist Church is situated in the middle of a large mixed housing area on the eastern side of St Helier, the capital of Jersey and has over 80 members.
The congregation comprises a mixture of middle-aged and older people, with an able and committed group of younger adults. Eight people were received into membership during the past year. Georgetown holds a Quiet Day once a year when members reflect on aspects of their mission and set aims for the coming years. The most recent was on October 7th, 2001.To develop and focus the work of the church, a coordinator has been appointed from within the congregation to work 9 hours per week.
We have just completed a major refurbishment of its premises. Fixed pews have been replaced by chairs and a deep pile blue carpet. The pipe organ has been replaced by an electronic organ. A magnificent stained glass window, showing Jesus calming the storm, provides a focal point behind the communion table. As part of the refurbishment, a family room and enlarged vestibule have been developed. During the refurbishment, services were held in the church hall alongside. The renewed premises were rededicated on March 16th, 2001 by Rev. Ian White, chairman of the C.I. District, at a service where the preacher was Rev. Dr. Leslie Griffiths from Wesley's Chapel, London. His message "The strife is o'er the refurbishment's done; now is the real work begun" has been taken to heart by the congregation who are looking for fresh ways to serve the local community.
